How to stay focused.
How to keep yourself focused on what is important, when there are so many distractions pulling us in all the direction? Lets see.
Once I attend this meditation camp, and out teacher lead us to a 24 minutes meditaion, the instructions were so simple and repetitive that there is no way you misinterpreted that. He said focus on top of your nose and observe your breath for next 24 minutes. You don’t have to do anything else but just make strong determination to do it. Very simple. But I found I couldn’t focus on it for even 10 second. And later i found out I was in top layer.
So the point here is it is normal, by default our minds are scattered. So if you can’t keep your mind in one direction it is expected. Just so we know what kind of material we are working with.
So How can I focus this mind in to one object.
Before we can focus we need to know where to focus, and before we can understand where to focus we need to know what is important to us. And I created seperate video for that, so lets assume you know what is important to us, for example
For me I like to devide my pursuits in 4 areas. Self- growth, relationship, work, health. Spent some time and know what matters to me. For example in terms of work, i want to align my work with my strengths, values, interest. I spent singinficat time understanding what are my strengths, values and interest. Now this gives me a broader direction, so now I know what direction is important. But this is too broad to focus on, it is like a fence so keeps unnecessay stuff out. But we need to narrow it down to build the foucs.
That require a clear milestone. Given the skill and experience what can I do. For example for me, it make sense to build one end to end program. Going from not knowing what is important to have a clear precise understanding and step by step map that leads to clarity and building my brand image along with it. And now this gives me a very clear foucs. It could be more precise but this works for me. But now if I have different ideas in my mind, i know immediately weather they are distractions or important.
Once you have a clear foucs point. The last variable is how to keep your interest alive. Because more often than not as you start to do it, you will find all kind of challnages and then your interest start to slip away, either you totally switch the path or your intensity start to drop.
If I start to loose the interest in it, I will start watching more videos of the people who are doing the same thing. I can read about it more. Get more information, the more attractive information I have the interested I became.
But as you understand it more, progress further, your interest start to grow more, and then your goal has to calibrated. And this guy did the best research on it. He says if you are feeling board that means your skills are higher than goal. If you are feeling frustated that means your skills are less and goals are high. But if your goals are slightly higher than skills, you experience intoxicating feeling of flow.
So to sum it up. It is natural state of mind to me scattered but can be trained into single pointed foucs. Than we need to have some degree of overall understanding of what is important to us in all the domain, then a clear milestone, we can further spark are intersted, and make the process more intoxicating by small calibrated goals.
